Robin McGuire elected to National Academy of Engineering

Robin McGuire was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in February 2007. It is one of the highest professional distinctions accorded to engineers.

McGuire was elected "for advances in engineering applications of probabilistic assessments in earthquakes and other natural hazards." He authored the EERI monograph Seismic Hazard and Risk Analysis, published in 2004.

Seismic hazard evaluations to support nuclear plant license applications

REI continues to support ESP (Early Site Permits) and COL (Construction and Operating Licenses) applications for nuclear power plants in the U.S. The latest submittal was made by Southern Nuclear Company in August, 2006, for a COL application at its Vogtle plant in Georgia. REI is currently supporting COL applications for seven other sites in the U.S.

Paper on "Early history of probabilistic seismic hazard analysis"

Robin K. McGuire has written a paper entitled "Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis: Early History" that describes the people and concepts behind the development of PSHA in the 1960s and 1970s. It will be published in the International Journal of Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics in early 2008.

PSHA for new nuclear plants

Risk Engineering, Inc. has completed seismic hazard calculations in support for new nuclear plants at the North Anna, Virginia site and at the Vogtle, Georgia site. We are in the process of completing calculations for license applications at an additional six nuclear plant sites in the Eastern US.
